Charlie's Story
My name is Charlie and I have worked on the fabulous 2 East for 6 years. I love my job, but I must admit that I have very little experience being a patient myself.
On May 12th that changed. At 3:30 am my water broke at work. While I was excited to meet my baby girl, her being only 36 weeks was an obvious concern for me. This being my first child I was already nervous in general, and did not know what to expect. I went down to the emergency room where they quickly took care of me and started to wheel me up to labor & delivery (L&D). As we got to the elevator I was greeted by a L&D nurse named Lacey. I can't even begin to tell you how comforting, helpful, and knowledgeable Lacey was. She was only my nurse for a few hours that night, but she really made an impact.
As I mentioned I was very nervous, scared, and felt alone. Not only was I going into labor 4 weeks early, with my first baby, not knowing what to expect, with a borderline preemie on the way, but also during a pandemic and without my husband by my side for the beginning of it all.
After Lacey took such great care of me and continuously reassured me everything was going to be okay, I met my day nurse Susan. Susan was also such an amazing nurse and actually took care of me and my baby during labor, delivery, and the day after over in postpartum. Even though postpartum was very busy with an influx of patients during my stay, she made me feel like I was her top priority and for that I could not thank her enough. Susan was just as reassuring, kind, and knowledgeable as Lacey. I really hit the jack pot with both of these amazing nurses.
All in all, I am writing this email to let you know that Grand Strand is really so very lucky to have both of these employees, and while I know that what I do every day for my patients over on 2 East makes a difference, it really was an eye opening experience to show how just taking your time explaining something, or just a simple “everything is going to be okay” can change the whole patient's experience.
